Join us as we navigate moving to Spain, fixing up a half-abandoned property and settling into our new life.
I didn’t come to inland Valencia for some big life reset. I was tired of the noise, the traffic, and feeling like I was always catching up. So I bought a half-finished house, a basic solar kit, and moved somewhere with more goats than people.
It’s not the “dream” Spain you see in magazines. The water pump stops working every so often. The roof needs patching. The road up here is rough enough to shake the shopping loose. But it’s quiet. The air’s clean. At night you can hear nothing except wind or crickets.
Greentie.org is just me keeping track of what works, what doesn’t, and what I’ve learned since turning the key here. Things like my first month off-grid when I realised most of my plans were wrong, or buying a half-finished house online which went about how you’d expect.
I’m not selling gadgets or miracle fixes. If you want the low-cost, sometimes awkward, definitely hands-on version of green living, that’s what you’ll find here. Spain’s rural areas are full of people doing the same — making do, helping each other out, and working with what they’ve got.
I’ll also write about how the bigger changes show up here. Less rain some years. Almond blossom turning up early. Streams that used to run all summer now dry by June. The European Environment Agency has the numbers, but living it is different.
Have a read. If you’ve had your own run-ins with off-grid living, leave a comment.
